“His Dark Materials” TV series in the works

Let’s move on from The Golden Compass

The BBC has announced a TV series based on Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy of novels. If you’re unfamiliar with the books, The Golden Compass is (unfortunately) the only screen adaptation of Pullman’s novels to date. Don’t let that put you off, though; HDM is packed to the rafters with spectacular action sequences, epic battles and heart-wrenching emotion as well as championing some of the most complex characters and controversial themes ever put to paper.

The shift from the silver to the small screen will excite fans of the books who will be looking for the show to sink its teeth into the intricacies of the story, an aspect of the medium which isn’t lost on Pullman himself:

“It’s been a constant source of pleasure to me to see this story adapted to different forms and presented in different media…now comes this version for television. In recent years we’ve seen how long stories on television, whether adaptations (Game of Thrones) or original (The Sopranos, The Wire), can reach depths of characterization and heights of suspense by taking the time for events to make their proper impact and for consequences to unravel.”

Should the BBC get the casting right and hands over a truly big budget to this massively ambitious project, we at G4meover can’t wait to see His Dark Materials make its debut on the small screen. After all, if the author himself is enthusiastic about handing over his baby to the BBC, who are we to argue?

New Line Cinema is producing the His Dark Materials BBC drama with Bad Wolf.

Give us your thoughts. Are you pumped up or will the story prove to be too much of a challenge once more?

With tonnes more announcements to come, G4meover is your source for news and discussion. Stay tuned.
